TONIGHT are the 2015 Emmy awards, recognizing excellence in primetime television (and streaming, of course).
Here are predictions/hopes/thoughts from three of our contributors…
MARK J. PARKER:
Who Should Win: Game of Thrones. Oh my GOT what a season. There were slow points BUT we always returned to incredible, revelatory, well-crafted scenes and moments that have only heightened the drama.
Who Will Win: Mad Men. Last season. Can’t deny the politics here.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Who Should Win: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Tina Fey is back again, and this show is incredibly fun, funny, and has a totally unique storyline.
Who Will Win: This is a real toss-up for me. I can easily see Veep take it again, but Transparent and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt have a real fighting chance to win, and to be real game-changers for programming on streaming services.
Lead Actor – Drama
Who Should Win: Bob Odenkirk. The success of Better Call Saul (I have yet to watch but can only imagine) is a testament to the strength of Bob Odenkirk as a performer. I’d love to see him receive a high honor for his work.
Who Will Win: Jon Hamm. Again, last season. He did wonderfully in those final episodes going through the ups and downs of Don Draper’s self-doubt.
Lead Actress – Drama
Who Should Win: Elisabeth Moss. The best performance / character development in the final season of Mad Men goes to Peggy.
Who Will Win: Taraji P. Henson. Everyone’s so ga-ga- over Empire, so I can imagine her taking the win. If not, Elisabeth Moss.
Lead Actor – Comedy
Who Should Win: Will Forte. For a really tough premise of a show, Will Forte just kinda makes this work with his own brand of humor. I give him mad props for this.
Who Will Win: Either Louis CK or Jeffrey Tambor.
Lead Actress – Comedy
Who Should Win: Amy Schumer. Let’s face it, everyone. 2015 has been the year of Amy Schumer. She’s smart and funny and talented. let’s give it up.
Who Will Win: Probably, again, Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Supporting Actor – Drama
Who Should Win: Peter Dinklage. Tyrion’s character never fails to be dazzling to watch.
Who Will Win: Peter Dinklage.
Supporting Actress – Drama
Who Should Win: Lena Headey. Cersei is a wicked character, but her ability to allow us to sympathize for her in that climactic moment of Cersei’s downfall is truly remarkable.
Who Will Win: Uzo Aduba. It’s also been a banner year for Uzo Aduba, and everyone loves Crazy Eyes. She definitely layers Crazy Eyes in this remarkable way that should be recognized.
Supporting Actor – Comedy
Who Should Win: Tituss Burgess. Two words, you guys: PINOOOOOT NOOOIR.
Who Will Win: Tituss Burgess or Tony Hale.
Supporting Actress – Comedy
Who Should Win: Kate McKinnon. She is hands down the best on SNL. Hillary Clinton is the best thing to have happened to her, and Justine Bieber. Nuff said.
Who Will Win: A tough category. Either Gaby Hoffman for Transparent or Anna Chlumsky because everyone loves Veep.
